Shooting under investigation in Elkhart

A fight in a parking lot near Nappanee and Franklin Streets in Elkhart led to shots being fired and two people being injured. It happened just before 12 p.m. on Thursday, March 21.

One of the people hurt flagged down a St. Joseph County Police Officer on McKinley Hwy in Osceola. The other person involved flagged down a South Bend Police Office at McKinley and Sunnyside when his car, which was hit with bullets, broke down. Both individuals were taken to the hospital for treatment. So far, there is no word of any suspects or arrests.

Elkhart Police released the following information about the incident:

On March 21, 2019 at 11:51 am an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Deputy was flagged down in the parking lot of 1630 S. Nappanee St, shortly after that an Elkhart City Officer arrived on scene. Witnesses told officers an altercation between some males in the parking lot had just occurred. Witnesses advised that the subject involved were fighting and the sound of gunfire could be heard.

At approximately 11:56 am one of the subjects involved flagged down a St. Joseph County Police Officer at 10433 McKinley Hwy in Osceola. That subject had non-life threatening injuries and Detectives of the Elkhart Police Department are speaking with him at this point.

At approximately 12:15 pm the other subject involved in the altercation contacted the South Bend Police Department when his vehicle broke down at the corner of McKinley Hwy and Sunnyside St in South Bend. South Bend Police arrived on scene and that subject was taken to Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The vehicle that broke down had damage to it that appeared to be bullet holes.

Detectives are currently investigating the incident and the vehicle involved are being processed for evidence. There were shell casing found in the parking lot at 1630 S. Nappanee St in Elkhart. It is believed at this point that all parties involved are speaking with police.
