Legislation has been introduced in Michigan’s Senate that would replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day in the state.

The bill, introduced by Senator Jeff Irwin, would make Michigan the 8th state to make the change to honor indigenous and tribal communities.

In a statement the State Senator said Michigan has “a rich and long history, extending long before Europeans first arrived.” He said it was only fitting that the state prominently recognize and celebrate the tribal traditions of the indigenous people of the state, and the continent.

Eight cities in the state have already opted to make the change, including Detroit, Ann Arbor and East Lansing.
