Hydrant crash in Elkhart shuts off water Thursday for dozens of apartments

A number of apartments in Elkhart were without water for hours after a car crashed into a hydrant.

The Department of Public Works and Utilities says a car struck a hydrant at the Hudson Pond Apartments around 2 a.m. Thursday.

The parking lot was flooded and there was damage to the underground line that fed the hydrant.

The driver has not been identified and no homes were damaged, but residents of the affected apartments reported residue in their water after the service was restored.

Cleanup is likely to cost a couple of thousand dollars.
