Changes coming to a dam on the Elkhart River

The US Army Corps of Engineers is about to begin a multi-million dollar overhaul of the dam at Waterfall Drive.

WSBT reports that a study has revealed leaks in the dam that could eventually give way. Planned repairs have been designed to allow fish to travel upstream and support canoeing and kayaking downstream.

Engineers recently visited the site to take a final survey of the terrain of the old dam near the Central Fire Station, and made modifications to the previous plan to eliminate safety concerns.

The plan, as it stands, would take around 6 months to complete at a cost of 2 point 4 million dollars. 65 percent of that would be paid for by the Corps of Engineers.
