A mental evaluation has been requested for an Elkhart man accused of taking part in a woman’s murder in October.

Donald Owen Jr., 20, is one of two men charged with the death of Kimberly Dyer in Elkhart. He and 19-year-old Mario Angulo Jr. are believed to have tortured the 31-year-old Columbia City woman in some way during the robbery and confinement incident.

The Elkhart Truth reports they face an enhanced sentence of life without parole because of the circumstances surrounding the crime, which also injured a Sturgis man.

Attorneys for Owen have filed a motion to determine competency as an individual with an intellectual disability. A court hearing on the request is set for Thursday.
