Voters in Michigan took advantage of no-excuse absentee voting in the state’s primary, setting a record by casting 2.5 million votes.

The total, released Thursday, broke the previous record set two years ago when there were statewide contests for governor and the U.S. Senate.

Officials believe nearly a third of the state’s voters participated. Nearly 1.6 million votes were cast by mail.
