Woman accidentally shoots herself on Indiana Toll Road

A South Bend woman is injured after accidentally shooting herself while in a car on the Indiana Toll Road.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. on September 29. ABC 57 News reports a police officer had stopped to check on a disabled vehicle at the 31 mile marker. The vehicle had stopped for a flat tire.

While waiting for the tow operator, the officer heard a gunshot from inside the vehicle.

A 20-year-old woman had accidentally shot herself in the left leg while trying to place the gun in a bag.

Police report she was sitting next to a one-year-old child at the time of the shooting, but the child was not injured.

The officer applied a tourniquet to the woman’s leg and administered first aid. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police report the gun belonged to one of the other passengers in the vehicle. So far, there hasn’t been any word on whether charges will be filed in the incident.
