Elkhart residents in need of Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE, can score some for free this weekend.

The City of Elkhart plans to hand out 25,000 PPE bags over the next two weeks that contain things like masks, hand sanitizer and postcards with COVID-19 safety guidelines.

The bags cost the city approximately $83,000, but Communications Director Corinne Straight-Reed says the effort will be paid for entirely by the CARES Act.

The first hand-out event will take place on Saturday at Council on Aging, between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The remaining bags will be distributed over the next week and a half.

The city is also partnering with Elkhart Community Schools to hand out gift cards to people who are struggling financially.
