Mishawaka man killed in crash on U.S. 12 in Cass County

A Mishawaka man was killed in a crash on U.S. 12 in Cass County.

The collision happened around 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4, just west of Birch Road in Porter Township.

The vehicle driven by Douglas Vankirk, 63, appeared to be traveling eastbound. Vankirk lost control and ran off the road striking several trees. The vehicle caught fire after coming to a stop.

First responders attempted to pull Vankirk from the vehicle, but he was trapped.

Vankirk died at the scene.

Factors into the crash remain under investigation.
