Elkhart County woman, 105, receives second COVID shot to fight the second pandemic of her life

We’re living through a major global pandemic. But there’s a woman in Elkhart who is living through her second.

In March, Nellie Yoder will celebrate her 106th birthday. The Elkhart Truth spoke with her after she received her second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday.

Yoder was infected during the Spanish Influenza pandemic when she was three years old. That strain of the flu created havoc worldwide in 1918 and 1919 after the First World War and killed roughly 50 million people.

She calls the COVID vaccine “a shot for progress.” In recent days Elkhart county’s seven-day positivity rate has slipped under 5% for the first time since March. If that level persists, the county could go from yellow to blue on the Indiana COVID color map.
