In less than 24 hours, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), has restored power to more than 90% of the approximately 28,000 customers whose service was disrupted after two severe storms on Sunday evening and early Monday morning.

As of 9:30 p.m. on Monday, June 21, fewer than 2,600 customers remain without power and crews will work through the night to restore as many as possible. And, the company will continue
working to restore power throughout the day tomorrow for any customers still impacted.

I&M continues to concentrate a large number of personnel in the hard-hit areas of South Bend, Elkhart and Southwest Michigan, where winds up to65 miles-per-hour resulted in:

  • 54 broken or damaged poles
  • 200 individual spans of wire down
  • 19 transformers damaged.

A large contingent of more than 450 I&M employees, contractors and colleagues from other
utilities are spread across the area to help restore power to impacted customers. To safely make repairs, crews need special gear, must access difficult-to-reach electrical equipment, often need to clear trees and debris, and conduct in-depth repair work.

I&M is also utilizing drones to gain a unique look from above to help assess hazards and damage to power lines and other electrical equipment.

Due to the widespread damage, I&M estimates the below restoration times;

INDIANA

  • 90% of customers in the South Bend and Elkhart areas will be restored by 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

MICHIGAN

  • 90% of customers in the Benton Harbor area will be restored by 11 p.m. tonight.
  • 90% of customers in the Three Rivers and Buchanan areas will be restored by 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

As crews continue to make progress, we will provide more specific updates for any customer whose restoration time will extend beyond these estimates.

I&M advises everybody to pay attention to several safety precautions:

  • Downed power lines. Stay away from any downed wires and report them to I&M. You can contact I&M by calling 1-800-311-4634, report on our app or website, or call 911.
  • Be careful around debris and fences. Fallen limbs and other debris can hide downed power lines, and a downed line may be contacting a fence out of line of sight. Look around carefully.
  • Trees could fall or drop limbs at any moment, please look up.
  • Traffic lights may not be functioning. Please use caution and be mindful of first responders and utility workers on the roadways.
  • I&M employees and contractors will be working alongside the road and in neighborhoods.
  • They also urge the public not to approach their crews.

I&M encourages customers to use the Indiana Michigan Power app to monitor the status of any outage affecting your home or business. IndianaMichiganPower.com/App. You can sign up for text and email alerts on the app or at IndianaMichiganPower.com/Alerts. See the location and status of outages using their outage map at IndianaMichiganPower.com/OutageMap
