An Elkhart man was arrested after allegedly being armed with a handgun after being stopped for shoplifting.

39-year-old Robert Sweet Jr. is charged with carrying a handgun as a convicted felon, theft and resisting law enforcement.

According to the Elkhart Truth, police were called to the Walmart on County Road 6 after a security guard noticed Sweet remove the UPC stickers from smaller priced items and place them onto larger priced items.

After using the self-checkout machine, Sweet was stopped by security when they discovered a loaded handgun in his waistband.

Police say the gun was reportedly stolen out of Mishawaka.

Court documents indicate that Sweet was out on bond in three pending cases, on involving multiple counts of felony intimidation.

He was booked in the Elkhart County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
