Legislation that would outline Michigan’s role to formally establish the border between Michigan and Indiana has been approved by the state Senate.

The bills, sponsored by Senator Kim LaSata of Coloma, would establish a commission that would be meet with representatives from a similar body in Indiana to make recommendations, which must receive final approval from each state.

While the survey is not expected to make major boundary movements, LaSata says several issues have come to light over the years because of the unclear lines, such as crashes and crimes that don’t clearly belong to one state or the other, leaving those involved in a difficult legal predicament.

The Senate bills now go to the House for consideration.
