Eight inmates have been charged with welfare fraud for filing for unemployment benefits while incarcerated, says the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

Police say the inmates obtained $80,000 illegally by using people who were not in jail to complete the online unemployment application and weekly vouchers to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

All eight inmates were charged with welfare fraud, which is a level 6 felony.
