Indiana police officers leave Monday morning for their annual fundraising bike ride.

Officers will start the 13-day ride at the Police and Firefighters Memorial at the Indiana Government Center. They’ll ride east to Richmond on the first day, then work their way around the perimeter of the state over the next 12 days before turning homeward from Madison, finishing at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

The annual Cops Cycling for Survivors ride raises money to help the families of eight officers who died in the line of duty last year. State Police Master Trooper Kevin Getz, the organization’s treasurer, says the ride also supports 25 foundations and scholarship funds named in honor of officers killed in the line of duty over the years. He says both the ride and the scholarships seek to ensure those officers aren’t forgotten after the initial burst of tributes and services.

Getz estimates this year’s ride has already raised more than 35-thousand dollars before the green flag on Monday.

About two dozen officers will be riding at any given time, though the exact number will vary as cyclists leave or join the ride.
