A 31-year-old man was arrested for reckless driving, knowingly or intentionally operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license, and two counts of resisting law enforcement on Sunday, Nov. 27.
An officer with the South Bend Police Department said he saw a black Toyota Avalon driving north on Olive Street without headlights on around 3:30 a.m. The Toyota reportedly made two quick turns, picked up speed and headed eastbound on Frederickson Street.
Reports say the officer turned on his emergency lights, at which point the Toyota headed north onto Olive Street, then east onto Prast Blvd., and then drove past three stop signs without stopping.
ABC 57 News states that the vehicle traveled through an alleyway and came to a T intersection. Reports say that the driver, later identified as Brandon Johnson, lost control of the vehicle and became wedged between a building and power pole in the 1900 block of Lincolnway West.
Johnson exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. After nearly being hit by a truck while crossing Lincolnway, and after leading officers through several backyards, Johnson was caught in an alley, police said.
Johnson was found to have been convicted in 2021 of operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license as well.
He is being held on a $1,000 cash bond and is due back in court on Dec. 13.
