A murder charge has been filed against a Michigan City man following a fatal shooting that occurred during a weekend altercation.

It was  just beore 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, when police received reports of a disturbance and a gunshot at a residence located in the 400 block of York Street. As officers were en route, they were informed that an individual had sustained a gunshot wound.

Upon arrival at the scene, they discovered Joseph Davis, 52, lying on the floor inside the house with a gunshot injury to his torso. Davis was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital but was later transferred via helicopter to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for more advanced medical treatment. He died to his injuries during surgery.

Investigators at the scene uncovered information indicating that Davis had engaged in an argument with a 31-year-old man named Jonathan Smith. Allegedly, as the dispute escalated, Smith shot Davis and fled the residence on foot.

Around 8:15 p.m. that evening, Smith voluntarily appeared at the police station. He was apprehended and charged with one count of murder.

He is presently held at the LaPorte County Jail, and was set to have an initial hearing on Tuesday morning.
