A 64-year-old man from Benton Township was shot and killed, and now, an 83-year-old man from Benton Harbor is facing a charge of open murder for the killing.

The shooting happened on Friday, May 26, in the 1700 block of Plimpton Avenue.

Upon reaching the scene, officers discovered the body of Robert Lee Jones, who suffered an apparent fatal gunshot wound to his neck.

The Benton Township Police Department spoke with witnesses who provided information leading them to the suspect.

Julius Oats has since been arraigned on charges of open murder as well as multiple other weapons-related counts.
