There could be more housing coming near Eddy Street Commons and Notre Dame’s campus.
The project will include an 108-unit apartment complex, condos, and retail spaces.
The $31.5 million dollar plan for the buildings on Indiana 23 and Corby Boulevard was supported by South Bend officials. One four-story building will feature upscale apartments while a three-story structure boasts luxury condos and 5,000 square feet of retail space.
HP Irish Corners LLC is developing the site and calling it the “5 Corners.” It’ll be across the road from Eddy Street Commons.
The South Bend Common Council gave preliminary approval Monday for a tax abatement that will waive an estimated $1.5 million in property taxes over 10 years.
Those who oppose say that allowing a tax break for developers is not fair for residents who are struggling to find homes.
Supporters say that tax abatements increase the amount of property taxes collected.
If fully approved, construction could start in September and finish in the fall of 2025.

It looks like the Notre Dame chosen elite get a huge break in not paying property taxes. Good thing the dumb working class home owners pay all the bills for the city. South Bend should change the name of the city to, Playground for the affluent.
“Those who oppose say that allowing a tax break for developers is not fair for residents who are struggling to find homes.”
But they don’t seem to mind taxing those same struggling residents to put the homeless up in hotels forever, to fund extravagant city salaries, or to fund the Democrat grift machine…
