Hot weather hits as many Hoosiers struggle with utility bills

In the middle of the sweltering summer heat, Hoosiers are also dealing with a utility bill crisis.

As of March, Indiana residents owed more than $45 million to the top five utility companies in the state. ABC 57 reports that 186,000 Hoosier accounts were at least two months behind on their utility bills, leaving some people to lose their power at a time when air conditioning is vitally important.

For their part, I & M Power addressed the crisis by saying they are committed to working with their customers one by one to provide payment options. NIPSCO says they have a policy of not disconnecting a customer when the temperatures are 90 degrees or above.
