A stolen vehicle suspect is dead, after being taken into custody.

It happened last week, when a South Bend Police officer was investigating a complaint of a stolen vehicle.

The officer saw the vehicle driving northbound on State Road 933 towards Roseland.

The vehicle crossed into Michigan before crashing on South 11th Street in Berrien County. The driver, 45-year-old Darrell Goodwin, allegedly left on foot and was later taken into custody.

He suffered an apparent medical episode while in custody and was administered Narcan and CPR. Goodwin was pronounced dead at the hospital. His autopsy is scheduled.

The South Bend Police will hold an internal investigation and the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
