A traffic stop on the Toll Road led to the discovery of card skimming devices.

It happened earlier this month, when an Indiana State Police trooper stopped a 2023 Chrysler for a moving violation in Elkhart County.

They say that during the stop, the vehicle was found to be stolen. Police say they also found items that they suspected were used for credit card skimming.

They also found gift cards to load the stolen credit card information. The juveniles in the vehicle were taken into custody.

Fraudsters often use gas pumps as locations to install card skimming equipment. It can be used to steal credit and debit card information.

Tactics change but there are some tips to keep yourself safe the next time you fill up. You can pay inside, use the tap-to-pay function, use a credit card instead of a debit card, cover the keypad when entering your zip code or PIN.

You’re advised to monitor your accounts for suspicious activity and report anything suspicious to your bank and to law enforcement.
