Across Michigan, turkey farmers are competing with imported birds again this Thanksgiving.

Many Michiganders are plucking a frozen bird out of the display at their local supermarkets this year. But small-town turkey farmers around the state are hopeful that more families will opt for a fresh bird this week that’s never seen a freezer.

Bridge Michigan reports that most of the frozen birds in the supermarket come from Minnesota, and Michigan’s wild turkey population has been a conservation success story.

Michigan Allied Poultry Industries says consumption of domestic turkeys has increased over 104% since 1970, and the state produces an average of 5.3 million turkeys per year.
