Michigan ranked 13th state for highest poverty levels

Michigan is now the 13th state in the nation when it comes to poverty levels.

Michigan has a 13.3 percent rate, bringing them from ranking as the 18th highest to the 13th highest in the country.

Bridge Michigan states that rising inflation not being matched by wage hikes has put more pressure on people.

Rent prices have gone up due to inflation, and the director of public policy for the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness says they saw an 8 percent increase in homelessness this year.

Food pantries have also reported an increase in demand. Bridge Michigan states, though, that the bump in poverty occurred while the state’s overall economy remained relatively stable. Nationwide, the poverty rate remains at 11.5 percent.
