The South Bend Fire Department is advancing its life-saving efforts.

The department is one of three fire departments in the state, and is the only department in Northern Indiana, that is able to respond to incidents with the availability of blood products in the field.

As of April 3, the department is able to administer whole blood in certain trauma and medical patients meeting predetermined criteria.

Fire Chief Carl Buchanon said that he is pleased that the department is continuing its top notch efforts of saving lives and providing South Bend citizens with the best care.
