One man dead after Mishawaka traffic stop leads to police pursuit

A man is dead after a traffic stop led to a police pursuit in Mishawaka. It happened around 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9. Police tried in initiate the stop near the intersection of Liberty Drive and West Marion Street.  The vehicle involved was a Dodge Ram. The driver was stopped on the Canadian National railroad tracks. Two people got out of the truck. The driver of then took off. The chase ended when the driver entered, then left the Knollwood subdivisions off of Gumwood Road and shot himself. The truck came to a rest against a fence. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Around 2315 hrs on 04/09/2024 a traffic stop was initiated near the intersection of Liberty Drive and West Marion Street.  The vehicle involved was a Dodge Ram, silver in color. The driver, who has not been positively identified as of now, stopped on the Canadian National railroad tracks and two persons exited the vehicle (one male, one female).  The male driver of the Dodge then took off heading north at a high rate of speed, which started the pursuit.
The driver continued north, ultimately entering one of the Knollwood subdivisions off of Gumwood Road.  For reasons unknown, when the driver exited the subdivision and headed south on Gumwood, he shot himself in the head.  The Dodge then came to a rest against a fence.  Medics were called to the scene.  The driver, however,  died at the scene.
This is an ongoing investigation by the Mishawaka Police Department Detective Bureau.
