With the 4th of July around the corner, officials in Indiana and Michigan are reminding the public of the rules and safety tips.

In The Hoosier State, consumer use of fireworks is protected from June 29 through July 3, from 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset. On July 4 they’re permitted from 10 a.m. to midnight.

In Michigan, residents can use fireworks from 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. from June 29 through July 4 on private property. Use on public property in Michigan, including sidewalks, streets, schools and churches is illegal and could result in a $500 fine.

The DNR reminds users to soak their used fireworks in water before throwing them out, have a bucket or hose nearby, and always by from a licensed seller.
