Elkhart City Council members have passed an ordiance that will ban homeless encampments.
The measure passed 6-2, during the council meeting, on Monday, Aug. 19.
It was one year after a similiar ordiance failed.
The difference, this year, is the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of an Oregon town that wanted to impose punishments for those found camping on public property.
City leaders say people will have 48 hours to move their belongings or face a fine.

What I want to know is why has the work in the vicinity of the toll road overpass on SR 19 is taking so long. There are never enough workers on site to get the job done. Meanwhile, one of the business streets in the area SR 19 is blocked of all summer. Why is the lane restriction started south of the entrance to the Menard’s? Why can’t it be moved to just north of that intersection?
Finally, does the city admin thing a single extra visitor will stop for food, fuel, a room, or just a look see because of all this construction. When I travel, I usually already have a room booked and am very familiar with the other amenities either at my destination or during the trip where we stop.I guess all the non-Elkhart city residents don;t count when disrupting their travel at this constricted area. School has started or will be very soon. This is just not acceptable especially when it will not matter at all for visitors coming here. All the hotels built adjacent to the toll road exit are because of NOTRE DAME Football games.
Incompetence, plain and simple. Elkhart has been the land of DEI since Roberson was sworn in.
