The Indiana Department of Transportation has issued a warning about a tolling-related text message scam that’s causing issues across the state.
The false messages claim to be from INDOT or tolling service providers, threatening recipients with fines, vehicle registration suspension, and legal action for unpaid tolls.
INDOT emphasizes that they do not use text messages to notify drivers of unpaid tolls and advises the public to delete suspicious messages without clicking on any links.
The FBI has also warned about similar “smishing” scams, with over 2,000 complaints reported since spring 2024.
Victims are encouraged to report fraudulent messages to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and to delete the texts.
