A Michigan City woman is facing neglect charges after police say to practically abandoned her children.

40-year-old Ashley McComas allegedly left her four children in a home with no heat and forced them to wear layers of clothes underneath blankets in filthy conditions.

Documents say the temperature inside their Tall Timbers Apartment unit was just 45 degrees during a January welfare check.

Police say the oldest child told them they had been without heat for a while.

Bags of garbage were found all over the apartment, along with feces on the floor and no toilet paper in either of the bathrooms.

The fridge and freezer contained mold, and most children did not have a mattress on their bed frame.

The children were placed in the care of their grandmother, and McComas could face up to a six-year sentence on each of the four counts of Felony Neglect of a Dependent.
