Gov. Mike Braun spotlights public safety laws during bill signing

Governor Mike Braun spotlighted two new public safety laws Wednesday during a ceremonial bill signing.
One of the new laws, Senate Enrolled Act 324, limits who can post bail. Starting July 1, charitable groups won’t be allowed to bail out people accused of violent crimes or those with repeat violent arrests.
The law also targets domestic violence cases. Judges will be asked to consider ankle monitors for people charged with domestic violence who also have a history of violent offenses and at least one conviction for invasion of privacy.
Michelle Hennessee attended the signing. Her sister, Jessica Stoebick, was killed by her ex-husband just days before Christmas last year. Hennessee said stronger bail rules might have saved her sister’s life.
“My sister only felt safe when he was in jail,” she said. “I don’t want anyone else to go through what we went through.”
Braun also signed House Enrolled Act 1014, which adds immigration status as a factor during sentencing. It also bans government funding or hosting of “obscene performances” and allows people to sue if that rule is broken.
“When communities are safe, families can grow and the economy can thrive,” Braun said in brief remarks.
He did not take questions but later signed eight more bills in similar ceremonies.
