UPDATE: The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation surrounding last night’s domestic disturbance and shots fired case that resulted in a large police response in the area of Indiana University South Bend. At this time, we can confirm the suspect is in custody and there is no longer an active threat associated with this situation.

ORIGINAL STORY: South Bend Police are searching for a suspect involved in a domestic disturbance that led to multiple gunshots and a crash near IU South Bend.

Police were called shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday, Sep. 22, to the 1000 block of South 23rd Street for a report of a domestic incident. Officers were told the suspect had fired a gun before leaving in a vehicle.

A short time later, police received reports of a crash near Northside Boulevard and Clover Street. Witnesses said the driver got out of the vehicle, fired additional shots, and fled on foot.

Multiple officers, along with drones and a K-9 unit, searched the area. As of 11:30 p.m., no gunshot injuries had been reported, and the suspect remained at large.

Because of the incident’s proximity to campus, Indiana University South Bend issued a shelter-in-place alert, which has since been lifted.

Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or contact Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP or online at p3tips.com/203.
