The Better Business Bureau has released a new study warning consumers about a surge in online pet scams.

The International Investigations Initiative report shows pet-related fraud now makes up nearly 18 percent of all online shopping scams, with losses topping more than 1.3 million dollars last year.

Scammers often use fake websites, stolen pet photos and untraceable payment methods to lure buyers before demanding extra fees for shipping or insurance.

BBB leaders say the emotional nature of buying a pet makes people vulnerable.

They recommend seeing the animal in person or over live video, avoiding wire transfers or cash apps and checking BBB profiles before making a purchase.
