Two Elkhart residents face charges after a reported battery led police to execute search warrants at a Stevens Avenue home, where investigators say they found cocaine, firearms and other evidence.

Elkhart Police were called shortly after 12:30 a.m. July 22 after a 911 hang-up call from a crying woman who said she was in a parking lot on Prairie Street.

An officer located the woman and observed swelling and other visible injuries. She told police she had been attacked by several people at a home in the 2300 block of Stevens Avenue. According to police, the woman said one female attacker struck her with a sock containing unknown objects and that she may have lost consciousness.

Officers went to the Stevens Avenue residence and obtained two search warrants as part of the investigation.

Police say they recovered a tube sock containing rocks outside the home. During the searches, officers also reported finding 34 grams of cocaine, marijuana or THC products and several firearms. One of the guns had previously been reported stolen to Elkhart Police.

Shonece A.M. Bailey, 34, of Elkhart, was arrested and later charged with Level 5 felony battery with a deadly weapon. Her bond was set at $25,000 surety or $2,500 cash.

Another resident, 31-year-old Hahkeem J. Layman of Elkhart, was also arrested. Prosecutors charged Layman with Level 2 felony dealing in cocaine, Class A misdemeanor possession of marijuana and Class C misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia.

Layman’s bond was set at $250,000 surety.
