Parents in Elkhart charged in the death of their six-month-old child appeared in court for separate trial status conferences Thursday.

Police were called to the Idlewood Avenue home in January after a neighbor said the father, 43-year-old Owen Miller, came seeking help for the baby.

Another neighbor found the infant unresponsive and began CPR. Court documents said the living conditions were disgusting, and they say the child later died at the hospital, where Miller showed signs of overdose.

Investigators say the mother, 42-year-old Nichole Neely, was high on meth, and toxicology tests found fentanyl and meth in the baby’s system.

The Goshen News says both cases were continued to December 15.
