Fire crews were called to two separate residential fires Monday afternoon, Feb. 16, in South Bend, including one that sent a person to the hospital and left a family dog temporarily unresponsive.

According to the South Bend Fire Department, the first call came just after noon to the 1800 block of East Fox Street for a reported structure fire.

When firefighters arrived, they encountered moderate smoke conditions and flames coming from the kitchen area. Crews initiated an interior attack while residents self-evacuated prior to their arrival.

One person was evaluated at the scene and later transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation. The extent of the injuries has not been released.

During a search of the home, firefighters found a dog unresponsive inside. The animal was removed from the residence, and medics provided care at the scene. Officials said the dog regained consciousness within minutes and was alert and moving around shortly afterward.

The fire was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes.

Just after 2:30 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a second residential fire in the 500 block of South Olive Street. Crews located fire inside the upstairs walls of the home and brought it under control in about 10 minutes. All residents safely exited the house.

The cause of both fires remains under investigation.
