Sheriff’s Office warns of new scam

Families of recent arrestees have recently been targeted by scammers.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are accessing the public access portion of the LaPorte County Jail record management system and identifying arrestees.

Then, they are locating contact information for family members of the arrestee and attempting to collect money.

The Sheriff’s Office says to never share sensitive information, don’t trust caller ID, be skeptical of urgency and do not say yes to unknown callers. If something seems off, hang up and report it to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.
