Police in Michigan City Police Department are asking for the public’s help in identifying a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a 50-year-old bicyclist with life-threatening injuries.
According to police, the crash happened around 6:50 p.m. on February 14 at the intersection of South Woodland Avenue and Pear Street. Officers were dispatched after a 911 call reported a bicyclist had been struck by a vehicle.
When officers arrived, they found the woman suffering from multiple injuries. She was transported by LaPorte County EMS to Franciscan Health Michigan City before being transferred to a hospital in South Bend for more advanced treatment.
A preliminary investigation determined that a white or silver Jeep SUV was traveling north on South Woodland Avenue when it struck the bicyclist at Pear Street. The driver left the scene and continued north before last being seen turning west onto East Barker Avenue.
Investigators say the Jeep is expected to have right front-end damage consistent with striking a black bicycle.
Members of the department’s Traffic Division and Evidence Response Unit processed the scene, collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and searching for surveillance video. Police say additional details are being withheld to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has surveillance or cellphone video is asked to contact Officer Daniel Revoir at 219-874-3221, extension 1008, or by email at drevoir@emichigancity.com. Tips can also be submitted through the department’s crime tip hotline at 219-873-1488 or through WeTip at 800-78-CRIME. Anonymous tips are accepted.
