A residential fire on the city’s north side is believed to have been caused by lightning.
Just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, the South Bend Fire Department was called to the 1000 block of North Notre Dame Avenue for a reported structure fire. When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the attic of the home and quickly began search and fire suppression efforts.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the attic, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the house.
No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials say early indications point to lightning as a possible cause due to storm activity in the area.
