Gun brought to South Central High School prom event; Suspect arrested without incident

One person was taken into custody after bringing a firearm onto school grounds during a prom-related event at South Central High School in Union Mills.

School officials say the incident happened during the Prom Grand March when a vigilant parent alerted staff after noticing the weapon. Authorities were already on-site for the event and responded immediately.

According to the school, Detective Deck with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office secured the firearm and arrested the individual without incident. The suspect was transported to the LaPorte County Jail.

No students were injured, and officials say all attendees remained safe throughout the situation.

School leaders say additional safety personnel, including the district’s director of school safety, remained present at the prom venue to ensure the event continued safely.

Superintendent Dr. Ben Anderson thanked the parent who reported the situation and praised the quick response from law enforcement and staff.
