Hotter weather brings opportunity to cut energy costs

As summer temperatures settle into northern Indiana, utility officials are reminding residents that staying cool does not have to mean paying higher energy bills.

Indiana Michigan Power is encouraging customers to take several simple steps to improve energy efficiency during the warmer months.

One recommendation is to regularly replace air filters in air conditioning systems and make sure vents remain open and free of dust and debris. Proper airflow helps cooling systems operate more efficiently.

Residents can also use ceiling fans to help circulate cool air. During the summer, fans should rotate counterclockwise to create a cooling breeze that can reduce the need for air conditioning.

Officials also advise keeping thermostats at a consistent temperature. Frequent adjustments can cause cooling systems to work harder and increase energy consumption.

Managing sunlight can also help lower cooling costs. While natural light can reduce the need for lamps and overhead lighting, closing blinds or curtains on windows that receive direct sunlight can help keep indoor temperatures lower.

In addition to conserving energy, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and take precautions when spending time outdoors as hot and humid conditions continue across the region.
