As summer recreation ramps up across Indiana, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is reminding residents to understand the state’s registration and title requirements before buying or operating golf carts, ATVs and other recreational vehicles.
The agency says understanding which vehicles require registration or titles can help buyers avoid fraud, comply with state law and prevent problems when purchasing or using a vehicle.
One area that often causes confusion is the difference between golf carts and low-speed vehicles, or LSVs. While golf carts do not require registration or titles through the BMV, LSVs do. LSVs are electric vehicles capable of speeds up to 25 miles per hour and are equipped with many of the same safety features found on passenger vehicles.
Off-road vehicles, including all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes, minibikes, recreational off-road vehicles and snowmobiles, must be registered. Those purchased after Dec. 31, 2009, also require a title.
Motor-driven cycles, commonly known as mopeds or scooters with engines of 50 cubic centimeters or less, must be registered but do not require a title.
The BMV notes that golf carts, go-karts, electric scooters, hoverboards, Segways, motorized bicycles, motorized tricycles and motorized coolers are generally exempt from state registration and title requirements. However, some cities and counties require golf carts operated on local roads to be registered through the local government.
The agency also reminds boat owners that most watercraft operated on Indiana waterways must be titled and registered with the BMV before heading out on the water.
Officials encourage Hoosiers to review registration requirements before making a purchase or taking recreational vehicles onto public roads or trails this summer.
