Elkhart man charged in State Street shooting

Elkhart Police // Alyssa Foster
An Elkhart man is facing charges after police say he shot another man during an argument Tuesday evening.
Court documents identify the suspect as 51-year-old Charles Wolfe. Investigators say witnesses reported Wolfe got into a fight with the victim outside an apartment building on State Street, then went inside, retrieved a handgun, and returned before firing two shots.
Police say cellphone video recorded at the scene supports witness statements. Investigators say Wolfe later admitted he retrieved the gun after arguing over a noise complaint and acknowledged he was prohibited from possessing a firearm because of a prior felony conviction.
The 54-year-old victim remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition, although police say his injuries are no longer considered life-threatening. The investigation is continuing.
