Three people were taken to the hospital after an early morning house fire in LaPorte.
Firefighters were called just after 3 a.m. Monday to a duplex on Federal Avenue, where flames had engulfed much of one unit.
A man and woman escaped from the burning home but were treated for smoke inhalation, and the man was later transferred to a Chicago hospital.
A neighbor in the adjoining unit also went to the hospital after experiencing breathing problems.
The fire was quickly contained, and investigators are working to determine what caused it.
Fire officials say there did not appear to be working smoke detectors in the unit where the fire started.
