Two Chicago men were arrested early Sunday following a pursuit on Interstate 80 that reached speeds of more than 130 mph and ended in a crash, according to Indiana State Police.

Police said the incident began around 3:30 a.m. near Burr Street and 29th Avenue in Gary. A trooper was traveling through the intersection when a Kia SUV making a turn nearly struck his patrol vehicle before making a U-turn behind him.

When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, police said the driver accelerated north on Burr Street and entered an I-80 exit ramp going the wrong direction. The SUV then made another U-turn and headed west in the proper lanes.

Investigators said the driver reached 136 mph in a 55 mph zone as the pursuit continued past Cline Avenue. The SUV eventually took the Kennedy Avenue exit, struck a barrier wall and came to a stop.

Police identified the driver as 28-year-old Devin T. Jackson of Chicago. Investigators said Jackson climbed through the driver’s window after the crash and resisted attempts to take him into custody.

A passenger, 29-year-old Kimbrew D. Horton of Chicago, allegedly attempted to run from the scene but was quickly apprehended by another trooper.

Police said Jackson showed signs of possible alcohol impairment and refused field sobriety testing. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation following the crash. Investigators obtained a search warrant for a blood draw.

Jackson was later booked into the Lake County Jail on preliminary charges including felony resisting law enforcement, misdemeanor resisting law enforcement, operating while endangering and operating while intoxicated.

Horton was jailed on a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement.
