A suspect was shot by a law enforcement officer Friday morning following a reported assault and standoff near the Home Depot in Benton Township, Michigan.

According to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, Benton Township police were called to an access road near the store around 8:37 a.m. after receiving a report that a man had fired a gun at a woman.

Officers attempted to contact the suspect, who was inside a van. Police say a standoff followed, and the man eventually fled on foot into nearby woods.

Law enforcement established a perimeter and began searching the area, including with a K-9.

A member of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Unit eventually encountered the suspect, who police say was armed with a gun. The officer shot the suspect.

The man was treated at the scene before being taken to Corewell Health Lakeland for additional medical care.

Michigan State Police have been asked to investigate the officer-involved shooting. Authorities say there is no known threat to the public, but people were asked to stay away from the area while investigators worked the scene.

The identities of the suspect and officers involved have not been released.
