A massive fire lit up the sky over downtown South Bend early Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called just after midnight to the Stadium Flats Apartments construction site near Four Winds Field. The building was engulfed in flames, and callers also reported a crane on fire.

Crews kept the fire from spreading to the Diamond View Apartments and the South Bend Cubs Performance Center. Diamond View residents were evacuated.

The cause remains under investigation.

South Street and Lafayette are closed near the scene while crews continue putting out hot spots. Drivers should avoid the area.
