The State of Michigan is looking for a new way to make drivers pay for the roads they use.

The state is studying a road usage charge that would base what drivers pay on miles traveled instead of the gas tax.

About 1,000 volunteers are expected to test the idea for six months starting in February.

The state is still deciding how to track mileage and how much a per-mile charge could cost.

No mileage fee has been approved, and any change would require lawmakers to sign off.
