You can add the State of Michigan to the list of states where school test results are raising a big red flag over reading performance.

Just over 38 percent of Michigan third graders were proficient in English language arts this year, the lowest rate in the 12-year history of the M-STEP.

Reading scores also fell across grades four through seven.

Overall, just 44 percent of students in grades three through eight were proficient in reading, while 35.5 percent were proficient in math.

State leaders said literacy reforms are underway, but many of the changes are still in the early stages.
