INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Supreme Court Justice Brent Dickson’s fellow justices praised him for his civility, grace and wit during his final day on the bench.

About 200 people packed the high court’s Statehouse courtroom for Friday’s retirement ceremony for Dickson, who’s the second-longest-serving justice in Indiana history.

Justice Mark Massa told the gathering that Dickson, who joined the court in January 1986, leaves behind an impressive body of legal opinions.

Massa said Dickson’s “wisdom, his uncommon grace and his cheer” will be missed on the five-member court.

Gov. Mike Pence praised Dickson for his service to Indiana and presented both Dickson and his wife, Jan, with Sagamore of the Wabash awards. They are among Indiana’s highest honors.

Dickson is retiring before reaching the court’s mandatory retirement age of 75 in July.
